Platt St

Updated December 22, 2016 1:23 PM

Platt St 1969

The building on the bottom right of the picture was for many years "Slaterfield Methodist Church" Why it wasn't "Platt St Methodist Church" I don't know.
At the end of the church building was a connecting - unnamed I think - sidestreet runnig past Back Platt St,Venture St,Back Venture St,Pitt St and Back Pitt St.It terminated in Back Pitt St which was also Back Fletcher St.
My house -No 65 - is just off the picture across the unnamed sidestreet past Maggie Phillips corner shop (No 61) and No 63 (Beaty and Ben Fosters house who lived there with their children Albert and Bernard) Actually my family also lived at No 63 but before I was born.
At the end terraced house opposite the chuch and on the corner of Platt St and Hobson St, (Hobson St ran from Platt St past Slaterfield, Back Slaterfield, Holden St, Back Holden St, Resevoir St and Back Resevoir St terminating at an entrance to "Bobby" Heywoods Park.Back Resevoir St ran parallel with the southern boundary of the park) lived Mr and Mrs Dan Bleakley a staunch member of the church and next door to them was Mr and Mrs Ken Pollitt another staunch church member (who like me later moved on to St Marks).Ken was also secretary of the Sons of Temperance meeting house that was on Swan Lane.
My mother and I were also members of the SOT,s and in accordance with her wishes I still am!. Coincidentally Jack Entwistle (he and his father before him owned the Coal yard adjacent to the playground of St Marks school) he took over as secretary of the SOT when Ken Pollitt retired.
Jacks widow Shirley took over form Jack when he passed on.
Another coincidence is that I am pretty sure that Lloyd Egertons family lived in what was Ken Pollitts house after he had moved home.
Thanks for the memories
